Hand-Arm Vibration Dosimeter SV 103

SV 103 is a wearable vibration meter that enables accurate measurement of hand-arm exposure throughout a full working day, in compliance with ISO 8041-2:2021 and ISO 5349. The built-in force detection sensor automatically detects hand contact with the vibrating surface, allowing the instrument to calculate actual daily exposure (A(8)) with high precision. This significantly reduces uncertainty by eliminating guesswork about tool usage time. Mounted directly on the user’s hand and small enough to fit under gloves, SV 103 ensures full-shift monitoring without interfering with normal activities. The device stores high-resolution time-history data, and optional 1/3 octave analysis provides advanced diagnostics of frequency content for source identification and compliance with Directive 2002/44/EC.

Highlights

  • Fully wearable Personal Vibration Exposure Meter (PVEM) that enables daily exposure monitoring without disrupting normal work activities.
  • Compliant with ISO 8041-2:2021, ISO 5349, and Directive 2002/44/EC, ensuring accurate and standardised measurements in occupational settings.
  • Equipped with the SV 107 accelerometer, which includes a contact force sensor to measure both grip and push force, essential for calculating true A(8) exposure time.
  • MEMS-based triaxial accelerometer provides high shock resistance, low power consumption, and compact form factor, enabling full-shift measurements under gloves.
  • Real-time logging of vibration values and contact force, with optional 1/3 octave analysis for frequency-specific source identification and artefact detection.
  • Automatic operation with minimal user interaction, simplifying compliance with new regulations for human vibration assessment.
  • Battery life over 24 hours and compact design make the SV 103 ideal for continuous use across multiple shifts or high-mobility tasks.

Practical Features in Use

ISO 5349-2 and European 2002/44/EC

A(8) vibration exposure both in m/s² and points

SV 103 measures the A(8) vibration exposure in accordance with the ISO 5349-2 and European 2002/44/EC both in m/s² and points. The exposure time is automatically selected with the force detection sensor and can be verified in the PC software.

MEMS accelerometers

The robust triaxial accelerometer

The SV 107 tri-axial MEMS accelerometer is extremely robust, SHOCK RESISTANT, uses very low power and is free of the DC-shift effect that adversely affects systems based on piezoelectric accelerometers. The SV 107 TRI-AXIAL accelerometer meets requirements of the ISO 5349 and is worn on the palm of the hand so it can be used underneath gloves.

Contact force

Detection of the contact of the hand with a tool

ISO 5349-2 defines that hand-arm vibration measurement should be made when worker’s hands makes contact with the vibrating surface until the contact is broken. With the SV 107 vibration sensor, it became possible to automatically obtain information about the period that the hand is in contact with the vibrating surface and to obtain the daily exposure time.

SV 103 Hand-Arm Vibration Dosimeter

Unique dosimeter with FORCE detection , which automatically obtains information about the period that the hand is in contact with the vibrating surface and evaluates the total contact time per day in order to calculate the A(8) exposure.

Applications

Hand-Arm Vibration

Hand-arm vibration meter
in accordance to ISO 5349 and ISO 8041

Hand-arm vibration occurs when one or both of the upper limbs is in contact with a vibrating surface (e.g. power tools, steering wheels and levers to control vehicles). Changes in the human body resulting from contact with mechanical vibrations are recognized as an occupational disease called “vibration syndrome” (or “vibration disease”). The only effective way to avoid vibration disease is by prevention. The ISO 5349 contributes to the gathering of consistent data in order to improve occupational safety. In particular, ISO 5349 specifies the general requirements for the measurement and evaluation of human exposure to hand-transmitted vibration.
