Why Class 1 (Type 1) Matters

Class 1 has tighter tolerances than Class 2, and US rules count the difference. EPA 40 CFR 201 for railroads requires a Type 1 meter; with Type 2, measured levels are reduced by up to 4 dB to allow for instrument error. Illinois 35 IAC 951 requires Type 1 for noise enforcement.

Type approval is a certificate issued by a national metrology institute after its own testing. The SV 971A holds it from PTB, BEV and GUM, so its Class 1 accuracy can be verified outside the manufacturer.
